Catalogue Note

As Marcel Roethlisberger observed (loc. cit.), it seems likely that this drawing was made as an independent, finished composition, rather than as a preparatory study for another work of art.  He also points out that the drawing is similar in spirit to a small painting of Cimone and Ifigenia, dating from the same year, in Berlin.
