Attributed to Thomas Willeboirts, called Bosschaert Bergen-op-Zoom 1613/14 - 1654 Antwerp

Hubert Dupond, Antwerp/Brussels (bears his mark, not in Lugt)

This drawing was long attributed to Van Dyck, but seems in fact closer in style to his highly talented follower, Thomas Willeboirts, called Bosschaert.  Very few drawings by the artist are known, but a rather finished Study of St. Gregory Reading, made as the design for a print by Theodoor van Kessel and now in the Lugt Collection, is in many respects similar to this in handling (see Flemish Drawings of the Seventeenth Century from the Collection of Frits Lugt, Institut Néerlandais, Paris, exhibition catalogue, London/Paris/Bern/Brussels, 1972, cat. no. 124, reproduced plate 79).
