Catalogue Note

Hendrik Johannes (Henri) Knip was the youngest of the well-known members of this extensive artistic family. He seems to have travelled to Italy and Switzerland around 1833, in the company of his father, Mattheus Derk Knip. Swiss landscapes make up about half of the artist's works, although according to Kuyvenhoven et al., most of his gouaches of Swiss scenes, such as this work, were made before 1850 (see De familie Knip. Drie generaties kunstenaars uit Noord-Brabant., exhibition catalogue, Zwolle, Noord-Brabantsmuseum, 1988, p.108).
