Catalogue Note
This is a preparatory study for Schalcken's painting in Braunschweig, Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum (see Beherman, loc. cit.). The drawing is only slightly smaller than the painting, and may have acted as a cartoon for it. The only significant differences are in the niche in the background, which is of a different shape.
