Attributed to Jacob Simonsz. van der Does Amsterdam 1623 - 1673 Sloten

This atmospheric drawing was formerly attributed to Thomas Wijck, but as Peter Schatborn has kindly pointed out, both the style and the distinctive combination of media suggest it is much more likely to be by Jacob van der Does.  Relatively few drawings by the artist are known, but a double-sided sheet in Hamburg, signed and dated JVDoes Romae / 1646, can be cited in support of the attribution (see Peter Schatborn, Drawn to Warmth, 17th-century Dutch artist in Italy, exhibition catalogue, Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum, 2001, pp. 132-3, figs. A and B).
