We understand that the artist "F.M." was from the circle of Ary Scheffer: the image of Liszt's face in this portrait resembles that in Scheffer's painting of 1837 (see E. Burger, Franz Liszt: eine Lebenschronik in Bildern und Dokumenten, 1986, p.93)
