Catalogue Note

The setting of the present work on the old harbour wall at Newlyn is almost exactly that of Langley's large oil ... Never morning wore to evening but some heart did break (1894, coll. Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1894, no.49). The South Pier in the background was completed in 1886 and does not appear in Langley's earlier watercolour In a Cornish Fishing Village - Departure of the Fleet for the North (1886, coll. Penlee House Gallery and Museum, Penzance) for which he had also used a similar viewpoint.
