Moïse Kisling (1891-1953)

Kisling first visited Holland in 1928, and returned to Amsterdam in 1934 and 1935. Fascinated by its colourful, picturesque buildings and canals, Kisling executed several views of the city- some busy, with numerous figures populating its streets and bridges, others, like the present work, focusing on its architecture and boats along the canal. Amsterdam depicts a row of houses along Prinsengracht, tightly attached to each other in schematised, child-like perspective, towered by the church rising in the background. This view includes number 263, Prinsengracht, in which Anne Frank and her family were hidden during World War Two, and where the teenager wrote her famous diary.
