Catalogue Note

In Cornwall, England, is located the little village of St.Ives, that used to be the home port of sardine fishermen. Nowadays it's a well known seaside resort because of the mild climate. St.Ives was a favored residence of Wolter because the light was very different here than at other coast places like Polperro. The light was more silvercoloured.
A lot of plein-air studies originated and Wolter painted the little harbour with backlighting in pastel colours, dominating  purple, blue and green.  In this period Wolter became a real landscape painter. There is no other dutch impressionist or luminist that knows how to get so many colours out of the light and water.
This is apparent in this painting, were the light and colours are very characteristic of this period.
