Roger Raveel was born in Machelen-aan-de-Leie, where he lives and works to this day. The breeding ground for Raveels work is his direct environment: his garden, village, family, neighbours and pets are often represented. Raveel combines figurative elements from his surroundings with abstract forms as the line, the square and the circle. To underline certain aspects in his work, Raveel uses bright colours and white planes. Just as the contrast between the figurative and the abstract, the bright colours against the white planes enlarge the sense of depth. With his timeless and contemporary work, Raveel is considered to be one of Belgium's most important post-war artists. The artist is especially interested to involve the viewer with his paintings.'
