Yehudi Menuhin bought this picture and the following lot during one of his Australian tours. They were displayed in the Menuhin's chalet in Gstaad, Switzerland.
The artist was born in Zurich from Polish parentage. He began his career in art as a dealer, travelling extensively in Europe, Africa and South America before settling in Australia. During the Second World War, Herman served in the Australian army and in 1945 became an official war artist. Herman painted landscapes, portraits and still life, and is particularly famous for his mysterious images of urban Sydney.
