7½-inch engraved silvered dial signed M.Hipp, Neuchâtel, Suisse, the lacquered brass movement signed Peyer, Favarger & Co. Sucessrs de M.Hipp, Neuchâtel, Suisse 16006, the crutch with beat adjustment and engaging with a lever with two ratchet arms for both advancing and locking the escape wheel, electric contact for the slave dial provided every minute, the separately suspended mercury pendulum with Hipp toggle switching arrangement mounted above electro magnets for impulsing the pendulum when required, the case with broken-arch cresting and turned finial above a moulded cornice, glazed trunk door and shaped bracket support at the base; with an ebonized circular wall slave with painted dial and brass movement similarly signed; accompanied by various original documents including a catalogue illustrating this regulator.

Catalogue Note
Dr. Matthäus Hipp (1813-93) of Neuchâtel devised what is now known as the Hipp toggle system as early as 1834 but did not actually fit it to a clock until 1842 when he was working as a clockmaker at Reutlingen in Würtemberg. After 1860 Peyer-Favarger & Cie of Neuchâtel commenced production of Master clocks using the Hipp system. The signatures on the backplates of the early Peyer-Favarger clocks refer to the association with Hipp.
