Catalogue Note

The Liechti family of clockmakers was prominent in the Winterthur area of Switzerland over a period of four centuries. The earliest recorded member of the family to produce clocks was Laurentius, who made this clock.  He was born circa 1480. The earliest clocks made by the family were all turret clocks but Erhardt, the son of Laurentius, started making domestic chamber clocks. This clock is extremely rare as only a small number of early iron turret clocks have survived in reasonably original condition over a period of four and a half centuries and are available for present day collectors. The fact that it is signed and dated makes it particularly desirable.
