Year Clock Co., A year-going and striking cherrywood mantel clock with A.D. Crane's Patent, New York, circa 1845

4½-inch paper behind glass dial signed Year Clock Co.New York, A.D.Crane's Patent within a repoussé gilt-brass surround, the gong striking movement with two large fusees mounted at the top of the plates, torsion pendulum with six-ball weight in a cherrywood Empire-style case with gilt capitals to the four columns, glazed front door and original green paper label on the blackboard.

Aaron Dodd Crane (1804-60), a native of Caldwell, New Jersey, was an inventive horologist. In March 1829, he received his first patent for an 'improved’ clock having only two wheels. On February 10, 1841, he was granted a patent for a torsion pendulum clock that ran for a year on one winding such as the present lot. About 1858 Crane moved to the Boston-area and became interested in the manufacture of tower clocks. He died of consumption at Roxbury, Massachusetts on March 10, 1860.
