Catalogue Note

In 1956 Diego Rivera enjoyed an extended respite at the Acapulco house belonging to his friend Dolores Olmedo. Pescadores (Fishermen) belongs to the series of paintings he executed in the dramatic settings of the famous cliff town located on Mexico’s Pacific coast.  Also from this period, and employing the same luminous palette, are Rivera’s colorful sunset paintings, now on view at the Dolores Olmedo Museum on the outskirts of Mexico City.

In 1955 Rivera married his fourth wife Emma Hurtado, a publisher and gallerist who had represented Rivera in Mexico City since 1946. Pescadores was purchased from Hurtado in 1956 and has remained in the same American collection since then.
