Richard Kingston, R.H.A. 1922-2003

The present work belongs to a series of large oils inspired by the Giant's Causeway in Co. Antrim. Though it is the ever-changing nature of this location that has inspired the artist's series for over twenty years, the expansive, almost ethereal quality of Hazy Day is typical of Kingston's work. The viewer looks directly out to sea towards and beyond an undefined horizon. There is little visual detail to distract the eye as sunlight filters onto an empty seascape. The mood is one of untrammelled calm. It is clear that the artist's interests lie not in topography but in a more subtle and personal evocation of this mythical environment.
