Catalogue Note
Founded jointly by Lady Isabella Augusta Gregory and Jack's elder brother, W.B. Yeats, the Abbey Theatre in Dublin became a famous centre of the Irish literary revival. Before burning down in 1951, the original theatre premiered the works of Irish playwrights including Synge, O'Casey and Beckett. The early years saw frequent upset, with a number of the more raucous and controversial productions disrupted by riots. Having moved to its new premises in 1966, The Abbey celebrates the centenary of its opening this year.
