Catalogue Note

Sajnu was an artist who came from Kangra to work for Isvari Sen (r. 1788-1826), Raja of Mandi. He brought with him the stylistic conventions of the Kangra valley which greatly influenced the court painting in Mandi. Sajnu's lyrical works are characterized by their exceptionally delicate treatment of facial features, an extensive use of white and the introduction of ornate framing devices and elaborate border designs.
