The present work is a portrait of Sylvia Colle, the youngest of the three sisters that Balthus had painted in 1954 for the large work Les Trois sœurs (private collection, see: V. Monnier and J. Clair, op. cit., no. P234). She can be seen in profile on the left of the composition, her head bent down to read.
