Catalogue Note

Mathilde Valet was Mary Cassatt’s maid for 45 years, and appears in several of her works. Valet took over managing the artist’s household when Cassatt lost her sight around 1923. After her death in 1926, a number of drawings and watercolours remained in the maid’s possession, and were later auctioned in Paris.

This is a study for the painting Deux mères et leurs enfants en bateau or Le Bain of the same date, now in the Musée du Petit Palais, Paris. For two other watercolour studies for the same painting see: Adelyn Dohme Breeskin, Mary Cassatt, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Oils, Pastels, Watercolours and Drawings, Washington, 1970, nos. 680 & 681.
