Scenerie bei Pasch was executed in 1936, one of only twenty five works dating from that year.  Klee recorded only five “panel paintings,” five “polychromatic sheets,” and fifteen “monochromatic sheets" in his oeuvre catalogue. As a result of his declining health and the increasing gravity of the political situation in Europe, the overall tone of his oeuvre was rather somber, notably in such works as Betroffene Stadt (Affected Town) and Die Ratlosen (The Perplexed Ones). Typical of Klee’s late work in the use of colored planes and black linear elements, the present work is relatively benign in subject although the surface of the Japan paper has been roughly scored by the strokes of colored pastel.
