Catalogue Note

This part of the coast, with the Falise d'Amont and the Aiguille (needle) in front of the Porte de Aval, had been popular with the great writers and painters of the mid nineteenth century such as Delacroix, Isabey, Corot and Courbet.  Monet, influenced by these artists visited and painted this area in 1868-69 and returned in the 1880's.  Following in his footsteps both stylistically and in subject, Loiseau visited and painted the same location in 1902.
