Catalogue Note

The bridge in the present work could be a special structure built annually to allow access to a particular church, an example of one such bridge appears in a painting by Luca Carlevarijs in the collection of the Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford.  The temporary bridge structure in the Wadsworth picture was built to allow access to the church of Santa Maria della Salute, during the annual week of festivities held in November to celebrate the end of the 1631 plague that had devestated the city of Venice.
