Catalogue Note
Johann Richter was born in Stockholm, but left his native country at age thirty and eventually settled in Venice where he remained for the rest of his life. He was a student of the painter Luca Carlevarijs and his earliest known works depicting Venice date from 1717. The Swede often worked in the style of Carlevaris, whom he imitated well. His later work showed a debt to Canaletto, both in coloration and conception.
