Catalogue Note
The composition of the present painting relates closely to Ricci's altarpiece of circa 1705 at Saluzzo for which there is a modello, with the same arched format, in the Royal Collection at Hampton Court.
Another version of the present composition, formerly in the Caspari collection, Munich, is rejected as a copy by Daniels (see Literature below). It is possible that the present work was the model for the engraving by Pietro Monaco, which records an identical composition of rectangular format, successively in the collections of Antonio Maria Zanetti, Gaspare Diziani and Consul Smith.
