Catalogue Note

We are grateful to Dr. Adrian Weibord for confirming the attribution of the present work to Gabriel Metsu.  He plans to publish the painting in his forthcoming monograph on the artist and dates the picture to circa 1657/8. The present painting is also accompanied by a photocopied certificate of authenticity from W.R. Valentiner dated August 28, 1935, and a second certificate from M. J. Friedlander dated February 1931.
