Catalogue Note
Two other paintings of this subject by van Delen are known: one signed and dated 1633 (on panel, 128 by 195.5 cm., present location unknown), and another signed and dated 1638 (Lille, Musée des Beaux-Arts, on canvas, 100 by 155 cm.). Although different in many respects, the Lille picture shows a number of elements similar to the present work, such as a courtyard paved with tiles in the center foreground on which the Queen and her attendants kneel, King Solomon seated on his throne under a loggia to the left, and a large gallery in the near center background with edifices beyond, all decorated with sculpted figures.
