Catalogue Note
Struck is considered to be perhaps one of the most technically gifted graphic artist of the 20th century who taught his techniques to such artists as Chagall, Liebermann and Corinth. During the First World War, he served as an officer in the German army in charge of the Jewish affairs on the Eastern front. There, on the outskirts of Kovno, he discovered and was deeply impressed by the simple and unaffected lifestyle of the Eastern European Jews. These poignant lithographs document the many faces and scenes of Jewish life in the East, capturing a world now lost.
