This work depicts the wife of the artist in a fashionable Viennese fin-de-siècle bourgeois interior. The objects that surround her epitomize the eclectic taste of the period inspired by the Aesthetic Movement : an Oriental lacquer cabinet, a Chinese blue and white vase, an Islamic bronze ewer, Persian carpets. By depicting his wife in such a refined interior, Kaufmann defines himself as a member of Vienna's affluent, educated and cultured elite.
