Catalogue Note

A distinguished member of the Danish Ree family was Philip Hartigv Ree (1778-1859), a manufacturer, merchant and religious reformer . At the age of 32, Ree settled in Aarhus. He established a business empire there, as well as founding a synagogue and officiating there as a rabbi. (Encyclopaedia Judaica, vol. 14, col. 17).
