Catalogue Note

The artist was in Spain from 1832-33. The fountains of Cybeles (by Francisco Gutiérres and Roberto Michael and Neptune (by Ventura Rodriguez) were constructed between 1775 and 1782. The wide carriageways of the Paseo del Prado were favourite places of recreation in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, rather like the Tuileries in Paris, with fountains as focal points
