Catalogue Note
Dunsford, on the River Teign, is on the eastern edge of Dartmoor, seven and a half miles south west of Exeter.
John White Abbott was born in Exeter in 1763 and he later practised as a surgeon and an apothecary there. He never travelled abroad and only made a few trips outside Devonshire and the surrounding counties. In 1825, after the death of his uncle, he inherited the estate of Fordlands near Exeter and in 1835 he was made Deputy Lieutenant for the County. He died in 1851, aged 88
