  • Inscribed on backboard: 1794/Sir Corbett Corbett  Bart of Adderley near Market Drayton Shropshire, who married Miss Cotton Aunt of General Cotton Viscount Combermere, the distant cousin but a most kind friend of my mother and brother though like Sir Corbett changed his name from Davenant

Catalogue Note

The sitter was born in London on 6th February 1752.  He was the only son of Thomas Davenant, of Clearbrooke in Pembridge, Hereford and Anne, sister and heir of Sir Henry Corbet, 6th and last Baronet.  He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge and having succeeded to the estates of his maternal ancestors, took the name of Corbet, instead of that of Davenant, by Royal licence granted on 20th January 1783.  He was created a Baronet on 27th June 1786.  He married Hester, youngest daughter of Sir Lynch Salisbury Cotton, 4th Baronet of Combermere and Elizabeth, daughter of Rowland Cotton, of Etwall, Derby.  He died on 31st March 1823 at Cambridge, aged 71 when the Baronetcy became extinct
