Catalogue Note
Isaac Blackburne was born on 26th November 1759. He was the son of Thomas Blackburne, High Sheriff of Lancaster, and Ireland, daughter and co-heiress of Isaac Green of Childwall and Hale. He was made High Sheriff of Warrington in 1803. He married Alice, sole daughter and heiress of Walter Kerfoot, on 13th June 1793 and died in 1830 leaving five daughters and five sons. He was the brother of Anne who married William Bamford, surviving her husband until 1795 when the estate devolved upon her eldest son, John (1754-1823).
It is recorded that a P.Blackburne sat for the artist in 1786 (see George C.Williamson & Henry L.D.Engleheart, George Engleheart 1750-1829 Miniature Painter to the King, 1902, p.87). It is possible that the 'P' is a mistranslation and that this is in fact, a reference to Isaac Blackburne's sitting
