Catalogue Note
Executed in 1910, the Porträt von Frau Dr. Horak is an important example of Schiele's newly developing Expressionist style. The present work belongs to his significant series of avant-garde portraits of members of the Viennese society executed in a variety of mediums. Although reminiscent of Klimt’s famous portrait paintings, Schiele's works from this period demonstrate a unique and independent artistic language. Stylistically, Schiele’s development in this year was staggering. His decision to leave the Akademie der bildenden Künste in 1909 allowed him to gain a new freedom of execution, as is evident in this work. .
