Folio (13 7/8  x 8 1/4 in.; 353 x 210 mm).  Engraved frontispiece by J. von Munnichussen after G. de Luresse, title-page printed in red and black, engraved folding portrait of the authorby J. G. Seiller after Gregory Brandmiler, numerous woodcut text illustrations; light to moderate text browning througout, lower corner of 3A3 torn. Contemporary full calf, spine gilt in 7 compartments, endpapers plain, edges sprinkled red; boards rather worn, joints starting at spine ends, minor losses to spine ends, lacking front free endpaper, lower free endpaper frayed.

Title-page in red and black, engraved frontispiece, numerous woodcut text illustrations, woodcut head- and tailpieces; title-page frayed at bottom margin and guarded, engraved frontispiece reinforced, occasional marginal wormhole trails, early marginal repairs to leaves P2–4, 5Y4, 5Z1, 6C1 and 6I1, a few short tears. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards; boards worn, rebacked with original spine laid down, corners and endpapers renewed.

Catalogue Note

First edition. The herbal is based on Verzascha's edition of Mattioli's Kreüterbuch, but is so reworked and augmented as to constitute practically a new work. The accompanying second edition of 1744 was substantially augmented and revised by the author's son, Friedrich.
