Catalogue Note

On May 16th, 1933, Rolex registered their newly designed 'Rotor' under Swiss Patent no.160492. This was to be one of the most important and revolutionary of Rolex inventions bringing, for the first time, an efficient automatic movement into the mainstream of Rolex production. To incorporate the rotor above the movement, the case back of the Oyster had to be raised. This was achieved by creating a domed back and led to the name 'bubbleback,' a term populatised by collectors in the 1980s, to describe the early Oyster automatics of which the present lot is an example.
