Catalogue Note

The present model is a reduced version of a figure from Bartolomé's Monuments au Morts erected in the Père Lachaise cemetery, Paris. Although primarily a painter, Bartolomé took up sculpture after the death of his wife in 1887. The monument occupied Bartolomé completely from 1889 to 1899 and on the day of its inauguration it was visited by some 98,000 people. He created various partial studies of the monument, separately cast in bronze of which one, L'Enfant Mort, is in the National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh and another entitled La Douleur is in the Metropoltian Museum of New York. The present model belongs to the same series. Originally the mourning woman was seen on the right of the monument, supporting a falling man.
