Catalogue Note
In comparing Dalou's Le Grand Paysan and the Sower with Jean-Francois Millet's images of workers, Hunisak describes the sculptor's peasants as 'both men of intrinsic dignity, as basic and uncomplicated as the cloth from which their garments have been fashioned. They belong to the earth, which supplies a livelihood in return for their unceasing labor, just as surely as gravity holds them in place and creates a downward pull on their coarse clothing'. (Hunisak p.54)
Le Grand Paysan is related to Dalou's extraordinary unexecuted Monument to Labour, but was conceived as an independent figure at the end of the great sculptor's influential career.
