Catalogue Note

The model for the present bronze may have been executed with the help of Gérôme's friend, the sculptor Emmanuel Frémiet. It relates to a painting of the same title, executed in 1889, for which the preliminary sketch is recorded by Ackerman as being inscribed à mon ami Frémiet, G.L Gérôme.
