Catalogue Note

Gemito returned to the subject of the Neapolitan fisherboy or 'scugnizzi' on many occasions, executing a prolific number of drawings and producing at least five sculpted variants of which the present Pescatorello is an example. A bronze version of the present model is in the Gallery of Modern Art in Milan but this silver cast is almost certainly the first of its model to appear on the market. A silver cast of a variant Little Fisherboy is known in a private collection while a silver cast of Meissonier was sold in these rooms as lot 105, 20 November 1997.
