John Dunn is the earliest maker of Northumbrian small-pipes whose work can be positively identified from his stamps. John Peacock was a member of the Newcastle waits until they were disbanded in 1793 and the leading player of the small-pipes of his time. Their friendship extended to working together to produce the first keyed chanter for the small-pipes. Both were also friends of the eminent wood engraver Thomas Bewick who was, with little doubt, responsible for the engraving on the drone mount
