Catalogue Note

The sitter was the only son of the Royalist, Woolley Leigh, and his wife, Elizabeth, daughter of Sir John Hare. He was knighted in 1660, which must correspond closely to the date which this portrait was painted. He married Hannah, daughter of Anthony Rolfe, who was descended by marriage from Pocahontas, the American Indian princess.
