Catalogue Note

This iconic veiw of Northumberland House at Charing Cross derives from a painting by Canaletto, in the collection of the Duke of Northumberland.  Samuel Scott was strongly influenced by the work of Canaletto, and many of his compositions find an echo in the works of the Italian master.  To the right of the composition is the statue of Charles I by Hubert Le Sueur.  This statue now stands at the entrance of Whitehall from Trafalgar Square.  To the top left of the composition lies the entrance to the Strand.  The artist has adopted the soft Italian light with which Canaletto infuses many of his compositions.
