A fine walnut longcase clock, Windmills & Elkins, London, circa 1730

12-inch dial signed Windmills & Elkins, London with mask and leaf spandrels, seconds dial to the matted centre and calendar dial in the arch with star-cut centre and flanked by dolphin spandrels, five pillar bell striking movement with pivoted rack and anchor escapement, the case with moulded broken-pediment and carved urn finial above panels of fret, the hood canted corners applied with foliate carved and fluted corbels, the trunk with foliate carved corbels to the upper corners, crossbanded trunk door, plinth and sides, the whole veneered with well figured wood of pleasing faded colour

John Clive Court lived in Warwickshire and, latterly, Guernsey. He formed a fine collection over nearly half a century, purchasing both from leading dealers and local and international auctioneers. The collection, which is being sold at Sotheby's throughout the second half of 2004, embraces a wide variety of categories, with particular focus on Old Master paintings, Chinese works of art and English furniture.
