Catalogue Note
Although Stuart was born in Rhode Island, his career took him to London in September of 1775. There he had considerable success as a portraitist for London society. In 1787 Stuart went to Dublin, where he remained for five years. After eighteen years abroad, he returned to America in the spring of 1793.
