Catalogue Note
The sitter was the fifth and youngest son of Garrett, 1st Earl of Mornington and Anne, eldest daughter of Arthur Hill, 1st Viscount Dungannon. He was the younger brother of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington. Henry Wellesley was born on January 20, 1773. He was M.P. for Truro in 1795 and Eye in 1807-9, and served as Ambassador to Spain from 1811-22, to Austria from 1823-31, and to France in 1835. He was created Baron Cowley in 1828. His marriage in 1803 to Charlotte, daughter of Charles, 1st Earl of Cadogan, ended in divorce in 1810; in 1816 he married Georgiana Charlotte Augusta, eldest daughter of James, 1st Marquess of Salisbury. Lord Cowley died on April 27, 1847 and was succeeded by his eldest son Henry Richard, 1st Earl Cowley.
