Catalogue Note
Henry Howard, 12th Earl of Suffolk and 5th Earl of Berkshire, was the eldest son of William, Lord Andover and his wife, Mary, daughter of the 2nd Earl of Aylesford. He was Lord Privy Seal (1771) and Secretary of State for the North (1771-1779). He succeeded his grandfather, the 11th Earl, on March 21, 1757 (his father, Lord Andover had been killed in a carriage accident in 1756). Lord Suffolk was married first on May 25, 1764 to Mary, daughter of 1st Viscount Hampden; she died in 1767. He was married again on Ausust 14, 1777 to Lady Charlotte Finch, daughter of Heneage, 3rd Earl of Aylesford. Lord Suffolk died in March, 1779.
