Catalogue Note
Mundig by Catton, out of Emma, was owned by John Bowes and trained by John Scott of Malton. Mundig's first appearance on the racecourse was the 1835 Derby which he duly won, beating Ascot into second place by a head, thus becoming the first horse trained in the north of England to win the Epsom Classic.
John Bowes, son of the 10th Earl of Strathmore, took over the running of the family's famous Streatlam Stud Farm in 1832. Mundig was the first of many classic winners for Bowes who went on to become the first owner to win the Triple Crown.
