Catalogue Note

This painting is a reduced variant of the left hand group of  figures in the portrait of The Earl Granville, Master of the Royal Buckhounds 1847-1849, with the Earl of Chesterfield, Master 1834-1836, and hunt servants at a meet by William and Henry Barraud that was with Richard Green, London (see London, Richard Green, Annual Exhibition of Sporting Paintings, October 1996, no. 19, reproduced).

Charles Davis was the most famous of the Royal Buckhounds who held office from 1835 to 1867. His father was Huntsman to the Royal Harriers and his brother was the sporting artist Richard Barret Davis.
